Casino the Movie
There is a small and tumbledown motel just south of The Strip in Las Vegas. It is called Motel 8 and if you should ever visit it you will find that nothing really works. The air conditioning is so noisy that it is better to fry, the plumbing is bizarre and most of the lights don’t work.
The maintenance man, whose job is to keep all these things going, spends his days sitting by the raised outdoor pool. He is a nice enough guy, but he doesn’t understand why anybody chooses to stay there anyway. The majority of guests work on the strip, in bars and casinos, or like us are hapless visitors to Las Vegas, there for a bit of action and hoping to save some money by staying at a cheap motel.
But there is more to this motel than meets the eye. The pool, so jealously guarded by Mr. Maintenance Man, has a glass window in its side and it is through there Sharon Stone was filmed swimming underwater in a scene from the best casino movie ever made. That film is of course “Casino” which was released in 1995 and directed by Martin Scorsese starring, alongside Sharon Stone (as Ginger McKenna Rothstein), Robert De Niro as Sam “Ace” Rothstein and Joe Pesci as Nicky Santoro.

The film tells the story of Sam Rothstein (who is based on the real character Frank Rosenthal) , a one time handicapper who is brought in by the Mob to oversea the running of a casino called the Tangiers, which is based on the real casino the Stardust. In the movie Nicky Santoro is a Mob enforcer and in real life the character was Tony Spilotro, who was often referred to as “The Ant”.
Casino is a great film in its own right; full of intrigue, violence and brutal murder with a strong romantic element going terribly wrong. But it also tells the story of the early days of casinos, of how they were run by organised crime lords, and how eventually the Mob was kicked out and replaced by corporate management. It is a fascinating story and, even though Casino was made some years ago, it has aged extremely well. Certainly it was Stone’s finest movie and for her role in it she received an Academy Award as Best Leading Actress and Golden Globe for Best Female Performance.
